Latest Forecast from ETOP – 6th March 2014
SYNOPSIS: Outbreaks reported in TANZANIA [and SOUTH AFRICA]; further outbreaks expected TANZANIA, KENYA and possibly MALAWI and MOZAMBIQUE.
CURRENT SITUATION: African armyworm outbreaks were reported in Tanga and Coast regions of Tanzania, where control operations were launched by the affected farmers with technical and material assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture Food Security and Cooperatives (IRLCO-CSA). [Extensive outbreaks also reported in Potchefstroom district, South Africa, see Press Reports]
FORECAST: AAW outbreaks will likely occur in Kenya and Tanzania and isolated late outbreaks may appear in Malawi and Mozambique. Active surveillance and timely reporting and preventive interventions remain critical (DLCO-EA, IRLCO-CSA, OFDA/AELGA).
