Current situation:

TANZANIA: Armyworm outbreaks were reported from Arusha, Mtwara and Mbeya regions during March but the extent of the infestation and action taken was not available at the time of compiling this report.

KENYA: Outbreaks were reported in Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Kwale counties infesting pastures on an estimated 400 ha. Densities of 300-400 caterpillars per meter square were reported in Taita Taveta County and farmers in the county were issued with pesticide and spray equipment by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to carry out control. Training of officers in Community Based Armyworm Forecasting was conducted at Nakuru.

MALAWI, MOZAMBIQUE, ZAMBIA & ZIMBABWE: There were no reports of Armyworm outbreaks in these countries.

Outlook for Apr-Jun 2014:

Armyworm outbreaks will subside in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe as the outbreak season in these countries comes to an end. In northern Tanzania and Kenya, outbreak is likely to continue due to prevalence of favourable rainfall conditions for breeding of the pest.
