Latest Forecast from IRLCO-CSA – 4th February 2014

SYNOPSIS: Extensive outbreaks reported in 4 countries (Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Mozambique).

Current situation:

MALAWI: Armyworm outbreaks continued in Malawi causing damage to mostly maize crops in Nsanje (80 ha crop affected in Nyachilenda and Makhanga areas), Blantyre (174 ha) and Machinga (372) Agricultural Divisions. The pest inflicted severe damage to maize in Blantyre and Machinga necessitating replanting in some areas. The Ministry of Agriculture supported affected farmers with pesticides for control and inputs for replanting.

TANZANIA: Armyworm outbreaks were reported in five agricultural Regions in Tanzania: Mbeya (189 ha crop affected); Coastal (80 ha); Dodoma (n/a); Morogoro (n/a); Lindi (n/a). Control was effected by farmers with material assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives.

ZIMBABWE: New armyworm outbreaks were reported in Mbire, Muzarabani, Mount Darwin, Mukumbura and Rushinga districts in Mashonaland province from 20 January 2014. The pest caused mild to severe damage to maize and sorghum and initial estimates indicated crop area covering 160 ha was infested. Affected farmers carried out control after the Ministry of Agriculture provided pesticide (Carbarly 85% WP) and sprayers.

MOZAMBIQUE: Armyworm outbreaks were reported in Sofala province causing damage to maize, rice and pastures: Nhamatanda District (156 ha of maize, rice and pasture); Buzi (102 ha); Dondo (96 ha); Chemba (100 ha); Chibabva (78 ha); Gorongosa (98 ha). The Ministry of Agriculture provided pesticide (Cypermethrin 20 % EC) and sprayers to the affected areas while farmers undertook control.

KENYA & ZAMBIA: There were no reports of Armyworm outbreaks.

Outlook for Feb-Apr 2014:

The risk of further armyworm outbreaks in most countries in the region is still high especially in areas where farmers planted late. Continued monitoring using
pheromone traps and preparedness to deal with outbreaks should be maintained.
