Latest African and Fall Armyworm Forecast from IRLCO-CSA – 4th Aug 2017

SYNOPSIS:
Outbreaks of Fall Armyworm (Spodotera frugiperda J E Smith) continued to be reported in Malawi, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
There were no reports of African Armyworm (Spodoptera exempta Walker) outbreaks from any IRLCO-EA Member Countries.

CURRENT SITUATION:

FALL ARMYWORM:

Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, J E Smith) outbreaks continued to be reported in Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe where the pest was reported affecting late planted maize crop in Kenya and irrigated maize crop in the other countries. Control by the affected farmers with technical and material assistance from the Ministries of Agriculture was in progress. The Ministry of Agriculture Kenya undertook training of extension staff and farmers on identification and control of Fall Armyworm.

AFRICAN ARMYWORM:

There were no reports of African Armyworm outbreaks in any of the IRLCO-CSA Member Countries.

OUTLOOK (Aug – Oct 2017):

The IRLCO-CSA region is likely to be free from African Armyworm outbreaks.

Fall Armyworm outbreaks are likely to continue especially on irrigated cereal and late planted crops.
