Radio interview: The fight against Zambia’s armyworm outbreaks
Armyworm expert Professor Ken Wilson talks about the African armyworm situation in Zambia to Radio France Internationale’s English broadcasting service:
The Zambian government has mobilised the military to lead the fight against an outbreak of armyworms. Armyworms are a type of caterpillar that eat vegetation and in large numbers they can destroy entire fields. The Zambian Air Force has begun to airlift chemical pesticide to several provinces to help farmers treat affected areas. The last outbreak of armyworms in Zambia was four years ago and if untreated an outbreak can devastate a country’s agricultural production and cause food insecurity.
