Latest African Armyworm Forecast from IRLCO-CSA – 5th Jan 2015

SYNOPSIS: There were sporadic reports of African armyworm outbreaks in Eastern Zambia which were controlled effectively by the Ministry of Agriculture. Monitoring of Armyworm moths using pheromone traps commenced in most Member countries. Pheromone traps and accessories were issued out to Member Countries in 2014: Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Outlook (Jan 2015 – Mar 2015): The Armyworm outbreak season has commenced in most Member States. The erratic rainfall patterns currently being experienced in Member Countries could be favourable for armyworm outbreaks. It is critical that mechanisms for monitoring and communicating moth trap to national coordinating centers are reinforced to ensure effective forecasting of outbreaks.
