Latest African Armyworm Forecast from IRLCO-CSA – 4th Feb 2016

SYNOPSIS:
African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta, Walker) outbreaks were reported in Malawi and Tanzania. Control was effected by the affected farmers with technical and material assistance from the Ministries of Agriculture. Outbreaks are likely to continue in these countries, while isolated outbreaks of the pest might occur in neighbouring Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

CURRENT SITUATION:

Malawi: Armyworm outbreaks that were first reported in late December 2015 in Kasungu, Machinga, Salima, Blantyre and Shire Valley Agricultural Development Divisions (ADD) of Malawi spilled over into January 2016. A total of 2 864.3 ha of maize, sorghum, rice and grass pasture were attacked affecting 9,324 households. Mild to moderate damage to crops was recorded. Control using Deltamethrin was carried out by the affected farmers with technical and material (pesticides & sprayers) from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development.
Tanzania: Armyworm outbreaks were reported in Liwale district of Lindi Region. Affected crops included maize, rice and grass pasture. Control was carried out by the affected farmers using Parmethrin. The Ministry of Agriculture provided technical and material assistance to the affected farmers.
Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe: There were no reports of armyworm outbreaks received from these Member countries during the month.

OUTLOOK (Feb 2016 – Apr 2016):

Armyworm outbreaks are likely to continue occurring in Malawi and Tanzania, while isolated outbreaks of the pest might occur in neighbouring Mozambique and Zimbabwe. There are chances of Armyworm outbreaks in Kenya at the onset of long rains expected from April 2016.
